Which Fire Rating Do You Need?
Fire rating specifies how long a door assembly can resist fire without structural failure, flame passage, or excessive heat transmission. NBC 2016 mandates specific ratings for each building use type.

Where the Emergency Exit Door fits
An exit door sits on an escape route, and its job is that anyone can get out under pressure, in the dark, without instruction. Single-action egress means one push, no keys, no thinking. It is specified at stair discharge points, final exits and anywhere a fire strategy marks a means of escape, with 60, 90 or 120 minute ratings where the route also needs compartmentation.
Emergency Exit Door vs the alternatives
Against a general steel fire door, the difference is the egress hardware and the direction of swing: an exit door opens in the direction people travel and releases with a single action from the inside. Against the panic-bar version, the distinction is the hardware type and the occupancy it serves; where large numbers may crowd the door, panic hardware to EN 1125 is the appropriate specification.
Specifying an Emergency Exit Door
Confirm from the fire strategy that this is an escape door and which way it must swing. Tell us the expected occupancy, since that influences the hardware. Say whether the door also needs to be secure from outside, which is normal for a final exit, and whether it must be alarmed or monitored when opened.
Fire Rated Exit Door and Panic Bar Fire Door in detail
Where each one fits, how it compares with the alternatives, and what to decide before you ask for a quote.
Fire Rated Exit Door
A fully tested fire rated exit door supplied as a complete certified assembly, leaf, steel sub-frame, intumescent seals, EN 1154 closer and EN 1935 hinges. Meeting NBC 2016 and EN 1634, it satisfies fire NOC conditions for escape doors in regulated buildings.
Where the Fire Rated Exit Door fits. Supplied as a complete certified assembly, this is the specification for projects where the paperwork matters as much as the product: hospitals, public buildings, PSU and government work, and any project where an approving authority will ask to see certification covering the whole assembly rather than the leaf alone. Ratings run 60, 90, 120 and 180 minutes.
Fire Rated Exit Door vs the alternatives. Against buying a rated leaf and sourcing frame, closer and ironmongery separately, this removes the gap that causes most inspection failures: a rating belongs to the tested assembly, and mixing components from different suppliers breaks the chain of evidence even when each part is individually rated. The trade is less freedom to substitute hardware, which is the point.
Specifying a Fire Rated Exit Door. Tell us what the approving authority requires to see, and at what stage. Give the rating, opening dimensions, wall construction and swing direction from the fire strategy. Confirm the ironmongery schedule early, since it forms part of the assembly, and flag any product your specifier insists on so we can check compatibility before manufacture.
Panic Bar Fire Door
A panic bar fire door fitted with EN 1125 touch-bar or push-bar hardware for crowded escape routes, releases under 150N in a single motion, even under crowd pressure. The mandated choice for fire exits in cinemas, malls, stadiums and high-occupancy buildings, rated 60/90/120 min.
Where the Panic Bar Fire Door fits. Where a crowd may reach the door at once, panic hardware to EN 1125 is what makes it usable: a horizontal bar that releases under body pressure from anyone, at any height, without needing to find a handle. It belongs on assembly areas, auditoria, large production floors, warehouses with high headcounts and any final exit serving significant occupancy.
Panic Bar Fire Door vs the alternatives. Against a standard exit door with single-action hardware, the difference is behaviour under crowd load. A lever needs to be located and operated; a panic bar releases from a push anywhere along its length, including from someone pressed against it by people behind. Where occupancy is low, standard exit hardware is appropriate and specifying panic hardware adds cost without benefit.
Specifying a Panic Bar Fire Door. Tell us the occupancy the door serves, since that is what determines whether panic hardware is required rather than merely nice to have. Confirm the rating and swing direction from the fire strategy. Say whether the door must be secure or alarmed from outside, and whether it is a single or double leaf, because double leaves need coordinated hardware.
